The XX – Islands (Live)

There’s not much more to say about the XX that’s not been written, blogged or delicately whispered over electro beats, so I’ll keep this short! As you will inevitably know, in an eminently sensible and thus utterly unpredictable decision, the Mercury Music Prize judges awarded the now trio with album of the year earlier this week.

After last year’s Speech Debacle the judges would have been mad to award anything else: but that’s never stopped them before. So apart from a late flurry of betting for the sadly never awarded Paul Weller, the XX looked a good bet throughout the running, and I for one am really glad they got, no less than they deserve.

I wrote about the band months back here and lauded their hip, young synths and smoked filled studios sound, the only new thing they’ve released since then is the iTunes Live EP from their show at the Roundhouse. While the EP could hardly be said to represent a drastic change of direction, the segueway into 9pm Till I Come at the end of Shelter is worth the £3.49 price tag alone! Aren’t they too young to remember late-nineties euro-house?! It certainly sounds like the crowd have no idea what’s going on!
